CURRENT UK CAA DEFINITION/S
The legal definition of a Microlight or Ultralight can vary in definition around the World and can be confusing:
19th August 2021 – Air Navigation Order Update (600kg – LIGHT SPORT MICROLIGHTS)
As defined by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in the UK, a microlight aeroplane is one that can carry a maximum of two people and has a Maximum Total Weight Authorised ( MTWA) not exceeding:
- 600 kg for a single seat and two seat landplane (Permit to Fly).
- 650 kg for a single seat and two seat amphibian or floatplane (Permit to Fly).
- Stalling speed at the maximum weight authorised not exceeding 45 knots (Calibrated Airspeed).
Whatever their size or shape all Microlights or Ultralights are designed to be fun to fly and inexpensive to operate, with a performance that can exceed many heavier light aircraft types.
